Since December 2018, the LKW Fund has been sponsoring art therapy programs under the supervision of Lisa Myers, Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and LKW Fund board member. We currently offer art therapy at the Integrated Arts Academy elementary school and at King Street Center. Art therapy increases and supports emotional growth, self-awareness, and understanding and empathy towards self and others. The emphasis on the creative process increases emotional resiliency while also improving cognitive and sensory-motor functions, thus promoting insight, enhancing social skills, reducing and resolving conflicts and distress, and advancing societal and ecological change. Our goal is to expand art therapy programming in schools and other venues to meet the needs of children who otherwise would not have access to the integrative methods art therapy offers, i.e. engaging the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone.
